In almost every field of human endeavor, there are outliers who stand out even among the most talented people in the world. Where do they come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this talk, I present as possible explanations two data-generating processes that yield lognormal distributions, and show that these models describe many real-world scenarios in natural and social sciences, engineering, and business. And I suggest methods &#8212; using SciPy tools &#8212; for identifying these distributions, estimating their parameters, and generating predictions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pydata.org\/global2023\/tickets\">You can buy tickets for the virtual conference here<\/a>. If your budget for conferences is limited, PyData tickets are sold under a pay-what-you-can pricing model, with suggested donations based on your role and location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My talk is based partly on Chapter 4 of <a href=\"https:\/\/greenteapress.com\/wp\/probably-overthinking-it\/\"><em>Probably Overthinking It<\/em><\/a> and partly on an additional exploration that didn&#8217;t make it into the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exploration is motivated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0022519300920083\">this paper by Philip Gingerich<\/a>, which takes the heterodox view that measurements in many biological systems follow a lognormal model rather than a Gaussian. Looking at anthropometric data, Gingerich reports that the two models are equally good for 21 of 28 measurements, &#8220;but whenever alternatives are distinguishable, [the lognormal model]<em> is consistently and strongly favored<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I replicated his analysis with two other datasets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Anthropometric Survey of US Army Personnel (ANSUR II), available from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openlab.psu.edu\/\">the Open Design Lab at Penn State<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Results of medical blood tests from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/labmed-2020-0005\/html\">supplemental material<\/a> from &#8220;Quantitative laboratory results: normal or lognormal distribution?&#8221; by Frank Klawonn , Georg Hoffmann and Matthias Orth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I used different methods to fit the models and compare them. The details are in <a href=\"https:\/\/colab.research.google.com\/github\/AllenDowney\/ProbablyOverthinkingIt\/blob\/book\/notebooks\/log_vs_normal.ipynb\">this Jupyter notebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ANSUR dataset contains 93 measurements from 4,082 male and 1,986 female members of the U.S. armed forces. For each measurement, I found the Gaussian and lognormal models that best fit the data and computed the mean absolute error (MAE) of the models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following scatter plot shows one point for each measurement, with the average error of the Gaussian model on the x-axis and the average error of the lognormal model on the y-axis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/log_vs_normal5-1-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/log_vs_normal5-1-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/log_vs_normal5-1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/log_vs_normal5-1-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/log_vs_normal5-1-1536x1152.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/log_vs_normal5-1-360x270.png 360w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/log_vs_normal5-1.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Points in the lower left indicate that both models are good.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Points in the upper right indicate that both models are bad.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the upper left, the Gaussian model is better.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the lower right, the lognormal model is better.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These results are consistent with Gingerich&#8217;s. For many measurements, the Gaussian and lognormal models are equally good, and for a few they are equally bad. On the left, the Gaussian model does not fit the data very well; on the right, the lognormal model fits so well, the gray area is barely visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why should measurements like these follow a lognormal distribution?
