{"id":394,"date":"2020-01-07T22:20:01","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T22:20:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/?p=394"},"modified":"2020-01-07T22:20:01","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T22:20:01","slug":"a-large-majority-of-americans-support-legal-abortion-at-least-in-some-circumstances","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/07\/a-large-majority-of-americans-support-legal-abortion-at-least-in-some-circumstances\/","title":{"rendered":"A large majority of Americans support legal abortion, at least in some circumstances"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is the third in a series of articles where I use data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/gss.norc.org\/\">General Social Survey<\/a> (GSS) to explore<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Differences in beliefs and attitudes between Christians and people with no religious affiliation (&#8220;Nones&#8221;),<\/li><li>Generational differences between younger and older Christians, and<\/li><li>Generational differences between younger and older Nones.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/05\/young-christians-are-less-religious-than-the-previous-generation\/\">In the first article, I looked at changes in religious beliefs<\/a> and found that younger Christians are more secular in many ways than the previous generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/06\/generational-changes-in-religious-belief-and-public-policy\/\">In the second article, I looked at views related to law and public policy<\/a> and found that young Christians are more progressive on most issues than the previous generation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, I use the same dataset to explore changes in opinions about abortion.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/05\/young-christians-are-less-religious-than-the-previous-generation\/\">For details of the methodology, see the previous article<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GSS respondents were asked, &#8220;Please tell me whether or not you think it should be possible for a pregnant woman to obtain a legal abortion&#8221; under different circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following figure shows the results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/generation4-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/generation4-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/generation4-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/generation4-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/generation4-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/generation4.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Generational changes in beliefs about legal abortion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The blue markers are for people whose religious preference is Catholic, Protestant, or Christian; the orange markers are for people with no religious affiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each group, the circles show estimated percentages for people born in 1968; the arrowheads show percentages for people born in 1993.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For both groups, the estimates are for 2018, when the younger group was 25 and the older group was 50. The brackets show 90% confidence intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we look for generational changes, we should notice the starting point: a large majority of Americans support legal abortion, at least in some circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In cases of severe birth defects and pregnancy due to rape, the majority is about 70% of Christians and 90% of the nonreligious.<\/li><li>In cases of serious danger to the woman&#8217;s health, it&#8217;s almost 90% of Christians and nearly all of the nonreligious.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Under other circumstances, opinions are more divided, with support near 40% among Christians and 70% among the Nones.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking now at the generational changes, I see only one that is likely to be practically and statistically significant: younger people in both groups are less likely than the previous generation to support legal abortion if there is a chance of serious birth defect.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, there is majority support in both groups, more than 60% among Christians and 80% among Nones at age 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Beliefs about abortion depend substantially on the circumstances; <\/li><li>In many circumstances, a large majority of Christians and the non-religious support legal abortion;<\/li><li>Even where there is disagreement between the groups, there is substantial diversity of opinion within both groups;<\/li><li>Generational changes in these opinions are generally small and within the statistical margin of error.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the third in a series of articles where I use data from the General Social Survey (GSS) to explore Differences in beliefs and attitudes between Christians and people with no religious affiliation (&#8220;Nones&#8221;), Generational differences between younger and older Christians, and Generational differences between younger and older Nones.
