And, contrary to what many people believe, it is <em>lowest<\/em> among millennials and Gen Z.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those results were based on data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/gssdataexplorer.norc.org\/variables\/272\/vshow\">General Social Survey<\/a> up to 2018. Now that the data from 2021 is available, I&#8217;ve run the same analysis and I can report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Support for gun control has continued to decline, and<\/li><li>Among young adults it has reached a new low.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The following figure shows the fraction of GSS respondents who said that they would favor &#8220;a law which would require a person to obtain a police permit before he or she could buy a gun.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_year-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-772\" width=\"619\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_year-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_year-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_year-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_year-1536x1152.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_year-360x270.png 360w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_year.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Support for this form of gun control increased between 1972 and 1999, and has been decreasing ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following figure shows the results from the same question plotted over year of birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_cohort-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-773\" width=\"627\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_cohort-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_cohort-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_cohort-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_cohort-1536x1152.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_cohort-360x270.png 360w, https:\/\/www.allendowney.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gss_favor_cohort.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>People born between 1890 and 1970 supported gun control at about the same level.
